Three recent movies...

I've been on a bit of a binge at the cinema lately. Here are some thoughts on what I saw.

Marley & Me. Okay, it's not the greatest piece of film, but you have to realize that anything involving dogs (I guess this goes for most animals kept as pets) is going to be manipulative to some degree. We all know this going in.

The story's about a journalist and his family and his dog. The worst dog on the planet, as it turns out. He eats and chews and chases and poops, and his family, through all the stress and insanity in life, loves this dog. If you've owned a dog of any consequential size, you can relate. The dog in the movie gets old, and has to be put down. I'm really, really glad my parents, and not me, got to do this with the dogs we've owned.

Believe me, seeing that particular event, in all its cinematic glory, is enough to dampen the eyes of even the most cold-hearted SOB. For this particular blogger, it was cause to open the floodgates and believe me, I made a beeline for the exit as soon as the film was over, hat pulled very low over the brow.

You should see it and know that I want a dog.

Next: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Wow wow wow. What a great film. I'm planning on seeing it again...in the theater. This is a big deal for me. I liked it that much!

Aside from all the amazing effects, the story is just...wow...so interesting. How would you live your life if you aged...backwards? It's an interesting thing to think about, and all the lessons Benjamin learns are a lot to chew on, mentally. The movie is shot beautifully, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and the rest of the cast do such a sweet job. I came out of the theater really wanting to make sure that the people I love and appreciate KNOW that I love and appreciate them.

Last: The Spirit. Skip it if you're not a fan of comic books. I like comic book adaptations as much as the next guy, but this one, despite Paz Vega (biting fist a la Lenny) looking like a bazillion dollars, almost put me to sleep. The one thing going for it is the imagery...and maybe Samuel L. Jackson. Fun to watch, but not enough to overcome the leaden story.

Besides, how (and why?) do you have a relationship with a city, as the Spirit contends to possess?

Marley And Me is a movie I think I will rent but I really wanted to see it. I passed the book a dozen times in the past couple of years and almost bought it to read. I am sad I didn't do it. I know I can now, but it's not the same.

Benjamin Button is on the #1 movie for me to watch and I can't wait to see it. Drew is for sure taking me to that one. I am glad you loved it! I couldn't imagine it turning out bad. It just looks so beautiful.

I don't know what Spirit is- so I am sure I won't see it.

Thanks for the movie reviews!! Love you cuz

I just got back from Benjamin Button. Loved it! I just wish I could make it through a movie without having to leave to go pee, because I hated to miss any of it.

Thanks for the movie reviews. I was just asking my friends at work what movies they had seen over the break so that I could get their opinions. Sounds like there are at least 2 worth seeing...have you seen 7 pounds yet??
